If you are an older person that got addicted to smoking thirty years ago when pretty much everyone did and the dangers were not as well understood, then you have my sympathy. But if you're young and a smoker, you're not only unbelievably stupid, you're a drain on the rest of us.
"But I'm an adult - I can choose to do something that hurts me personally if I choose." Yes, but when it costs the rest of us money, it's not okay. The health care costs associated with illnesses caused and worsened by smoking is in the BILLIONS. It's a huge part of the reason that health insurance is so damn expensive for the rest of us. My solution: if you CHOOSE to smoke, you don't get health insurance, period. You pay your own way when you get sick, and if you can't afford to, well, you should have thought of that before you started killing yourself.
I honestly cannot understand why anyone would be dumb enough to start smoking in the first place. Let's see.... it costs a fortune, makes you look scummy and uneducated, makes you smell like hell, and kills you. WOW, how can I get involved in this? Jackass.
Let's talk about the smell. See, if you smoke, you get used to the smell being around you all the time, and your senses of taste and smell get deadened. So you may be laboring under the illusion that other people can't smell you from, say, thirty feet away. You are incorrect. There are times at work when I'm waiting for the elevator, and I can smell the smoke on someone in the elevator when it's still a floor below me. That, my friends, is truly stinking. It amazes me that there are young girls that would not dream of going out in public without carefully applied makeup and perfect hair, yet they have no problem walking around smelling like a freaking ashtray all the time. Brilliant! Bravo.
I also find it fascinating that the people most likely to smoke are those that can least afford to set things that they've paid a lot of money for on fire. I've actually had tenants explain to me how things are tight and they don't have all their rent money while smoking one cigarette after another. Hmmmm, where is that extra money going? Losers.
Let's not even talk about people that blow smoke all over their children. Aside from the fact that, whether you are smart enough to belive it or not, secondhand smoke DOES pose a tremendous health risk when you're expoosed to it constantly, having mommy and daddy puffing away makes it far more likely that junior will grow up to smoke as well. If you love your kids, do you really want to sentence them to a lifetime of poor health and smelling like shit?
The bottom line to consider if you're a young person that smokes: do you plan on smoking for you entire (shortened) life? Is that an ambition of yours? Of course not. Everyone says that they'll quit someday, and that makes them as dumb as a bucket of laundry soap. Do you think it's going to get easier to quit later on, you ignorant ass? It is a fact that the percentage of people that smoke decreases drastically as level of education increases. If you're an idiot, you probably think that's because "them people with book learning are so snooty". If you have the ability to use your head for some purpose other than keeping your hat off your shoulders, you realize it's because smart people don't smoke.
